The Language of Zellige
The art of Moroccan mosaic
In Marrakech, zellige stands as a silent writing of material and geometry. Born from ancestral expertise, this mosaic art consists of assembling small hand-cut ceramic tiles to create geometric patterns of remarkable precision. Each piece, called a "tessella", is cut one by one before being patiently assembled.
Influenced by Andalusian and Arab-Muslim traditions, zellige draws from a tradition where pattern repetition becomes language. Behind its apparent perfection hides a multitude of mastered imperfections, giving each composition its unique vibration.
Here, nothing is industrial. Zellige is an art of detail, where the hand guides each step, transforming material into living decoration.
Patterns that dress the city
In Marrakech, zellige extends beyond workshops: it dresses the entire city. It appears on fountains, riad walls, shaded patios and hammams, where it captures light and reflects it in subtle nuances.
In the medina, certain workshops offer glimpses of the fabrication process: stacked tiles, artisans focused on cutting, patterns being assembled on the floor. Each space becomes a stage where geometry takes shape.
The eye lingers on details: a repeated pattern, a colour variation, an almost perfect alignment. Zellige reveals itself progressively, as a discreet yet omnipresent signature of Marrakech.

Composing with the patience of gesture
Initiating oneself to zellige means entering a work of precision and patience. Unlike other materials, here the gesture is more meticulous, almost meditative. You must understand the shapes, assemble them, anticipate the pattern before it even appears.
Guided by an artisan, the first tessellas are handled, adjusted, repositioned. Little by little, the design comes to life, revealing the hidden logic behind repetition.
The experience lies not only in the final result, but in the process itself. Composing a pattern means accepting to slow down, observe and build with rigour. Through this work, Marrakech reveals itself differently: in detail, precision and balance.
