Agafay, the mineral desert at Marrakech's doorstep

We often imagine the desert as something far away. Yet less than an hour from Marrakech, the Agafay desert already offers this feeling of elsewhere.

It's not a sand desert, but a mineral landscape, dry, open. Stone hills stretch as far as the eye can see, with a natural passage from city to almost total silence.

Camps settle into this environment without transforming it. You come to extract yourself for a few hours, enjoy the silence, the stars, and the light that changes as the sun moves. There's no noise, sometimes no signal… and that's precisely what attracts.

Places designed between nature and comfort

The first contact with a camp in the Agafay desert often surprises. You arrive by track, in the middle of nothing, and suddenly a place appears. A pool, tents, a carefully designed setting. The transition is stark.

Some camps favour sobriety, others luxury. Each offers a different reading of the place, between Berber tents, design installations or spaces open to the landscape.

Around, the desert reclaims its rights. The sky opens at nightfall, stars become visible, and silence thickens. What strikes isn't what you do, but what you stop doing.

Must do

Disconnecting, watching, listening

The experience often begins with a drive. You leave Marrakech, the landscape changes, and in a few dozen minutes, you arrive in another world.

A programme is often offered: camel ride, sunrise yoga, dinner under the stars. But the essential happens elsewhere. Put down the phone. Sit. Watch the horizon. Do nothing.

Then night falls. The temperature changes. Light shifts, colours grow warmer, and the sky gradually reveals its stars. The desert imposes its rhythm, slower, more silent. What remains isn't just the memory of a peaceful moment. It's perhaps the feeling of having found something simpler.
